Let’s hear it for the weekend! It’s a busy one in our house – with a family wedding and my youngest turning 3 years old! Last week I blogged about some of our favourite kids birthday party locations, if you haven’t checked it out yet you can read it HERE. And now here is what is going on in and around Vancouver on the weekend of May 14 and 15.
JURASSIC QUEST
Saturday and Sunday, The Vancouver Convention Centre
Jurassic Quest is North America’s largest and most realistic Dinosaur event. Guests will walk through the Cretaceous period, the Jurassic Period and The Triassic period and experience for themselves what it was like to be among living, breathing dinosaurs.
SPOT PRAWN FESTIVAL
Sunday 11 am – 3pm, False Creek Fisherman’s Wharf
Free event for all ages. This family-friendly festival will have live cooking demos with some of Vancouver’s top chefs as well as live music and more.
TIAN JIN FESTIVAL
Saturday and Sunday 11 am – 4 pm, 3426 Smith Avenue, Burnaby
This fun family festival showcases the multiculturalism of Metro Vancouver. Try some delicious authentic Taiwanese street food, immerse yourself in inspiring multicultural performances, and win prizes from family-friendly games!
LUNAR ECLIPSE VIEWING PARTY
Sunday 7:15 pm – 11 pm, H.R MacMillan Space Centre
This sounds like a very cool event if you have older kids who don’t have to be in bed too early! Learn more about the Moon and eclipses in a special show in the Planetarium Star Theatre. The observatory will also be open so you can check out the Moon up close through the telescope, and there will be time to explore the exhibits in the Cosmic Courtyard.
RIVER BASIN DAYS
Saturday 12:30 pm – 3 pm, Redwood Park, Surrey
This month’s River Basin Days workshop is being offered for free, as it is part of the City of Surrey’s Environmental Extravaganza. This month head into the forest to gather inspiration from nature itself to write your own nature poetry! No experience necessary; the educators will guide you through some simple exercises that are sure to help you craft a poem you’ll be proud of. This workshop is aimed at older children.
FREE COMMUNITY PADDLING DAY
Sunday 12:30 pm – 3 pm, Creekside Community Centre
Come on out with your friends and family and learn to dragon boat for free! The equipment you’ll need is supplied as well as an instructor to guide you through the basics of paddling as you enjoy a quick tour around False Creek. Paddling sessions start at 12:30 PM, 1:30 PM, and 2:30 PM.
SPRINGTIME AT LAVENDERLAND
Saturday 10 am – 4 pm, Lavenderland, Richmond
Head out to this lavender farm to enjoy a craft market with one of a kind treasures and yummy treats. Admission is by donation.
BURNABY BLOOMS
Saturday 10 am – 4 pm, Confederation Park, Burnaby
This spring festival stretches over three weekends. This Saturday’s festivities take place in Confederation Park and there will be ecological themed activities and demonstrations along with free entertainment.
