Family Events for the Weekend of May 28 & 29

What a fun weekend of events lined up for the final weekend of May! Get out there and enjoy one of the many family friendly events taking place around the lower mainland. Here’s my guide to the weekend of May 28 and 29.

LADNER MAY DAYS

Friday-Sunday, Memorial Park, Ladner

A fun 3-day community event with live music, amusement rides, pancake breakfast, a parade and a fastball tournament. The May Days parade is on Sunday starting at noon.

THE LITTLE MERMAID JR

Sunday 2:30 pm and 7 pm, York Theatre, Commercial Drive

Vancouver Performing Stars brings the classic musical “The Little Mermaid” to life on stage! Fun for all ages.

DAY OUT WITH THOMAS 

Saturday and Sunday, The Railway Museum of British Columbia, Squamish

Thomas the Tank Engine is rolling into town for a weekend of big fun. Jump on board Thomas for an interactive train ride, pick up your Dream Pass and head to the Play Pod or say Hello to Sir Topham Hatt. Note: it appears this event may be sold out.

SUPER SATURDAYS AT FRASER RIVER DISCOVERY CENTRE

Saturday, Fraser River Discovery Centre, New Westminster

The Fraser River Discovery Centre hosts a special bird feeder-making event this weekend and learn about the different types of birds that frequent the Fraser . Guided tours are also available in the afternoon.

SALMONBERRY DAYS FAIR

Saturday, 11 am – 3 pm, Dunbar Community Centre

More than 30 vendor tables, BBQ and concession, live entertainment, fun crafts and kids activities.

FEATHERS AND FUNGHI

Saturday and Sunday, Maplewood Flats, Dollarton Hwy, North Vancouver

At Maplewood Flats visitors will have opportunities to engage with art and nature: at the Coast Salish Plant Nursery, at the Coast Salish Plant Exhibition, and on the trails. You can also register ahead of time for special workshops.

FESTIVAL OF THE BEES

Saturday, 10 am – 2 pm, Langley Demonstration Garden

Celebrate the official opening day of the Langley Demonstration Garden. Explore the wild world of bees and pollination at Langleyʼs Annual Festival of the Bees. Meet a variety of bee-wise folks who will educate and inspire. This free, kid-friendly event will include beeswax candle making, seed bomb creating, bee house making, a plant sale, a seed swap, honey vendors and more

COMO LAKE ANNUAL FISHING DERBY

Sunday, 6 am – 12 pm, Como Lake, Port Coquitlam

A free event for youth under 16 years of age, the Como Lake Fishing Derby has prize giveaways and a pancake breakfast available for a nominal charge. Hundreds of prizes are awarded each year for a variety of catches, from the largest and smallest fish to the strangest catch of the day. Bring your own fishing pole and bait.

BC POLISH FESTIVAL

Sunday, 1 pm – 9 pm, Leigh Square Community Arts Village, Port Coquitlam

Come celebrate Polish-Canadian heritage. You don’t want to miss out on the great Polish cuisine and a day full of entertainment!

SURREY INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL

Saturday and Sunday, Surrey Arts Centre and Bear Creek Park

Enjoy art activities, workshops, storytelling, and live performances at the Surrey Arts Centre and Bear Creek Park.

HYACK INTERNATIONAL PARADE AND FESTIVAL

Saturday, 11 am – 4 pm, Tipperary Park, New Westminster

a parade with floats, marching bands and other entries in New Westminster. Plus Tipperary Park gets turned into a hub of free entertainment, music and activities for people of all ages, while supporting local Vendors, Food Trucks and other Artisan Creators to display and sell their creations.​ Families can drop by for free face-painting, crafts, games and free musical entertainment.
