The first weekend of October is here and for me, that means I can turn my mind to all things Thanksgiving and Halloween! Hoping to get a little front porch fall decor going this week. There are a lot of great fall themed events taking place this weekend, check them all about below with my family friendly event listings for the weekend of October 2-3.
PUMPKIN PATCHES AND CORN MAZES
As of October first all of the pumpkin patches now open for the season. Head to my latest blog post (linked in heading above) for a complete list of the best ones around the Lower Mainland – there are so many to choose from!
BC’S ANNUAL GIANT PUMPKIN WEIGH OFF
Saturday 11:00 am, Krause Berry Farm, Langley
Bring the family out for a fun day at the farm and view award winning Giant Pumpkins and Master Carver Bruce Waugh. Weigh off start time is around 11. Giant (Atlantic) pumpkins, giant squash, largest field (regular) pumpkins, longest gourds, giant tomatoes and largest watermelons, are weighed in the order of their estimated weight, lightest to heaviest, with the largest pumpkins being weighed last. The length of the weigh-off depends on how many registrants enter.
FARMER’S MARKETS
Saturday and Sunday, Riley Park, Trout Lake, West End, Kitsilano, and Mount Pleasant
The farmer’s markets will be open until the end of October so be sure to check them out. Head to the website to check the dates and times of each location. There are a number to choose from and that fall harvest is looking so good, so shop local!
UBC Farm also has a great Farmer’s Market on Saturdays from 11 am – 2:00 pm, this week they are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the market. For more info check out here.
Fort Langley Village Farmer’s Market is running from 9.00 am – 3.00 pm
SCOTIABANK DANCE CENTRE OPEN HOUSE: 20th ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Saturday 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm, Scotiabank Dance Centre
Free admission. Highlights include a performance on the outside wall by Vancouver’s spectacular aerial dance company Aeriosa; a creative activation of the Granville Street frontage by Company 605 and guests; and free classes, events and exhibits. visit the website for a full events listing.
THE SKY’S THE LIMIT: GIRLS FLY TOO
Saturday and Sunday 9:00 am – 5:30 pm, Abbotsford International Airport
It’s the world’s largest free gender diversity outreach event of its kind in Aviation, Aerospace, Marine and Defence. This event features interactive aircraft displays, hands-on activities related to aviation, and a treasure hunt for all participants. There will be free helicopter flights for female first-time fliers! Everyone is welcome regardless of age, gender or citizenship and no registration is required. All event participants aged 12 and up, display partners and volunteers will be required to show proof of being fully vaccinated to gain entry to the free event – without exception.
KIDS FIRST SATURDAYS
Saturday 10:15 am – 3:30 pm, The Polygon Gallery, North Vancouver
Kids First Saturdays is an opportunity for families of all kinds to create an in-house art project, based on the exhibitions being shown in the Gallery. The projects are geared towards children ranging in age from 4 to 14 years old, though there is no age requirement to participate. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is by donation. Timeslots for Kids First are available at 10:00am, 12:15pm, and 2:30pm. Space is limited.
GROUSE MOUNTAIN
Saturday and Sunday 9:00 am – 9:00 pm
Grouse Mountain is still open for the next few weekends for their mountaintop attractions such as the Grizzly Bear Habitat, Ranger Talks, Owl Talks and spectacular Lookouts. A Mountain Admission Ticket includes round trip access via the Skyride and access to all of the above listed attractions.
FIRST ANNUAL WITCHILANO PADDLE
I don’t know if any of my readers will actually be up for partaking in this unique event, but if you happen to be in the Kits Beach/English Bay area it is certainly worth keeping an eye out for! Inspired by Portland, Oregon’s Witch Paddle, drawing over 300 witchy participants, this is Vancouver’s First Annual SUP Witches Paddle. You can expect to see witches and warlocks paddling out from Kitsilano across to False Creek and back and cackling and casting spells along the way.
GRAND OPENING OF PORT COQUITLAM COMMUNITY CENTRE
Saturday 12:30 pm – 6:00 pm, 2150 Wilson Ave, Port Coquitlam
An event filled afternoon that includes a ribbon cutting, activities for all ages, free fitness classes and other try-it activities, roving performers and more.
FRED PENNER AT THE VSO
Sunday 2:00 pm, Orpheum Theatre
Beloved children’s entertainer Fred Penner joins the VSO to welcome back families to the Orpheum. Check the website for ticket availability.
