This Fun and Free Burnaby Attraction is Opening for the Season

28.04.2022

The Burnaby Village Museum is opening for the season in just one week. On May 7 the open air museum will officially kick off the summer season, and run until September 5. open from Tuesday to Sunday plus statutory holidays. The museum is open between 11 am – 4:30 pm and admission to the museum is free, so it can’t really be beat!

I visited with my kids last summer and we had a great day walking around and checking out all of the sites.

For anyone who hasn’t visited before, the Burnaby Village Museum is an immersive experience of the 1920s village comprising heritage and recreated buildings. You can walk around outdoors and go into old businesses, homes and even an historic school house to see what it would have been like to go to school one hundred years ago.

I think after living in a pandemic for so long my kids were especially excited to get to walk around other people’s homes! I guess going into someone else’s home is a novelty now.

This year actually marks 50 years since the Burnaby Village Museum opened to the public. To celebrate the occasion you can expect new exhibits, entertainment and activities. One of the ongoing activities children will be able to participate in is a scavenger hunt. Just pick up the scavenger hunt challenge at the gates.

The village features live actors (and a real blacksmith) and through these people visitors can learn a lot about what life was like for people living in British Columbia a century ago. It is very entertaining to watch the live demonstrations.

It’s hard to beat the beauty of the village on a gorgeous sunny day! There are lots of spots to sit and rest, and everything is stroller friendly. As mentioned before, entry to the village is free, however back in service this year is the heritage carousel ride, and rides there cost $2.65 each. Last summer when we visited the carousel was closed, but I remember it from when I was a kid and it is definitely a highlight of visiting.

There is also an old fashioned ice cream parlour where you can grab a little lunch, something cold (or hot) to drink and of course – choose some yummy ice cream! I highly recommend putting a family visit to the Burnaby Village Museum on your to-do list.
