It’s not every day you get to literally step into another world. But that’s exactly what we did at the tail end of March spring break. We picked up a couple of my son’s friends and headed out to Aldergrove to venture into the world of virtual gaming. We live in Vancouver, so Aldergrove was a bit of a drive for us – but worth it. Because tucked away in this corner of Langley is Another World VR — a place where you can fight robots, escape ancient tombs, and look absolutely ridiculous while doing it. And yes, we have the videos to prove it.
Another World VR is a family-run business and proudly holds the title of largest free-roam VR arena in all of British Columbia. My family had never tried virtual reality gaming before, so naturally, I approached it with a mix of curiosity and mild panic. But within minutes, the staff had us geared up and fully immersed in a new dimension — one where our favourite dance moves actually helped us dodge enemy fire (my daughter Rowan was especially fond of busting out her dance moves repeatedly).
There are 25 different games to choose from — including adventure quests, escape rooms, and PvP (that’s “player vs. player,” for those of us who have no idea what we are talking about). With up to 14 players per game, it’s perfect for kids and parents to take part in. There are a number of great games that are appropriate for kids even as young as 6! We didn’t bring our youngest, Ellie, as she was busy at a friend’s birthday, but we would bring her along next time. And if you’re planning a birthday party — this is your place. They’ve got two massive 700 sq ft arenas for virtual play and then lounge zones and a party room to host food and cake after.
For our visit, we chose to play a game called “Sky Scraper”, where we split up into teams of 3 – battling one another as we moved between floors of a giant skyscraper. It was really cool to be totally immersed in a game like that. Pushing buttons on elevators, and feeling like you are moving up and down…where you really aren’t! (this is where the ridiculous videos and photos of us moving around come in)
All in all, it was a wild, laugh-filled, slightly sweaty afternoon that gave us a much-needed break from reality — by stepping into a virtual one.
Would we go back? In a heartbeat. Would I stretch before next time? Definitely.
