Family Events for the Weekend of December 17 & 18

PNE WINTER FAIR

Saturday and Sunday, 4:30 pm – 10:30 pm, the PNE Fairgrounds

The first weekend of this new,ten-day event. Enjoy holiday-themed food and beverages, an outdoor Holiday Marketplace, carollers, a Holiday Theatre with live kids show and local performing groups, nightly tree lighting ceremony, a Christmas edition of Duelling Pianos, WinterLights walk through light display, and holiday-themed ice skating in the Agrodome featuring live music.

CANADIAN PACIFIC HOLIDAY TRAIN

Saturday and Sunday, various locations listed below

The beautifully lit CP Holiday Train is back for its 24th year supporting food banks and food shelves across our network by raising money, food and awareness for food insecurity issues. You can catch this year’s holiday train  at Haney-Maple Ridge (Across from Billy Miner Pub on Saturday at 7:50 PM), Pitt Meadows (Corner of Harris Road and Advent Road, at the railway crossing on Saturday at 8:55 PM), Port Moody (300 loco Road, behind Arena and Rec Centre on Sunday at 4:45 PM), and in Port Coquitlam (West Coast Express Station, Port Coquitlam on Sunday at 6:15 PM).

THE SNOWMAN

Sunday 2 pm, The Orpheum

The family holiday tradition returns with the Oscar®-nominated short film, The Snowman. The film is shown on the big screen and the VSO plays the score live. Only a 45 minute show, great for all ages.

CELEBRATIONS OF LIGHT

Saturday, 11:30 am – 12:30 pm & 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm, Coquitlam Heritage at Mackin House

A free event (registration required) where you can enjoy a dynamic presentation of poetry, music and traditions that celebrate the light during our season of short days and long nights. Learn about Diwali, Hannukah, Kwanzaa and Winter Solstice as well as how the French community in Maillardville celebrated the Christmas season. Join for a seasonal craft & treats.

CHRISTMAS SKATE PARTY 

Saturday 10 am – 12 pm, West End ice rink, Haro St, Vancouver

Skate with Santa, play games on ice, watch performances and improve your skating skills. Event admission is by donation and skate rentals are $5.

KERRISDALE ARENA FREE SKATE

Sunday 5:30 pm – 7 pm, Kerrisdale Arena

Head out to Kerrisdale’s ice rink for a family free skate, and skate rentals are free too!

KERRISDALE VILLAGE HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGE

Saturday 12 pm – 4 pm, 41st ave in Kerrisdale Village, Vancouver

Visit Kerrisdale’s village and catch the free horse drawn carriage for a short ride around the neighbourhood.

WINTER PLAZA PARTY

Saturday 12 pm – 5 pm, Point Grey Village, Vancouver

Have your photo taken with Santa, enjoy a musical performance with the nerdy elves, hot chocolate and maple taffy sugar shack, holiday crafts and other activities.

GOH BALLET’S THE NUTCRACKER

Saturday and Sunday showtimes, Queen Elizabeth Theatre

A holiday classic and a favourite Vancouver tradition, Goh Ballet’s annual production of The Nutcracker brings together the best local talent and Principal Dancers from world renowned professional companies on the stage.

THE SNOW QUEEN: A FROZEN ADVENTURE

Saturday and Sunday showtimes, Surrey Arts Centre

Enjoy the opening of this new pantomime. Sing along with toe-tapping music, groan at corny old jokes, cheer the good guys and boo the bad in another hilariously funny show with sparkling sets and colourful costumes. A perfect holiday treat for the whole family!

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES: THE MUSICAL

Saturday and Sunday 1 pm and 7:30 pm showtimes, The Gateway Theatre

Fall in love with Anne Shirley in this musical adaptation of L.M. Montgomery’s timeless classic.
