MY WESTCOAST FAMILY

Family Events for the First Weekend of 2022

01.01.2022

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all made it through the holiday relatively unscathed. I know this year wasn’t an easy one for a lot of us, and now with the kids staying home from school for longer – I am sure we are all looking for covid-safe activities. There are still some holiday events going on this weekend if you are still in the spirit and hoping to hit up some of the gorgeous lights before they are gone until next year. Here is what is going on for the first weekend of 2022 – January 1 and 2.

WINTER WONDERLAND AT MINORU ARENAS

Saturday 12 pm – 4 pm and Sunday 10 am – 2 pm, 2:30-6 pm and 6:30 pm – 9 pm, Minoru Arenas

A wonderful place for a skate. It’s drop-in and proof of vaccination is required for this indoor arena skate. Holiday tunes and skating under a canopy of lights is fun for everyone.

LIGHTS TO THE LODGE

Saturday and SundayCypress Mountain

A safe and easy one-kilometre snowshoe trek to the historic Hollyburn Lodge along a self-guided trail through the enchanting Old Growth Forest. The trail is lit with LED lights strung sustainably through the forest boughs of ancient Cedar, Fir and Hemlock trees. A great way to spend an evening with the family.

SOAR WITH SANTA AT FLYOVER CANADA

Saturday and SundayCanada Place

Christmas may be over but there is still time to fly with Santa and his elves on a magical flight across Canada and on to the North Pole for the final weekend of Soar With Santa.

LIGHTS AT LAFARGE

Saturday and Sunday, Lafarge Lake, Coquitlam

This was one of my favourite places we visited this holiday season and the lights are staying on until the end of January, so if you haven’t been yet, this could be a great time to check out the charming stroll through the lights.

HERITAGE CHRISTMAS

Saturday and Sunday 1pm – 9 pm, Burnaby Village Heritage Museum

The final weekend to take in this free and fun event. Wander the heritage village, enjoy the lights and ride the carousel (for a small fee). Advance reservation is not required.

CANYON LIGHTS

Saturday and Sunday, Capilano Suspension Bridge

Another gorgeous outdoor outing that I’m sure is even more magical in the snow! We loved visiting this a few weeks ago, and I would even return to take it all in a second time.

CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT FOR KIDS AND YOUTH

Saturday 9 am, Brydon Lagoon, Langley City

Free with registration. An all ages event along a stroller friendly route. Each family will get a participation kit and the data will be submitted to Bird Studies Canada.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: TRILOGY MARATHON

Sunday 11 am, The Rio Theatre

Ok a Lord of the Rings marathon is pretty intense, but I am a pretty big LOTR nerd so I would be into it! Maybe when my kids are older…

CHRISTMAS TREE CHIP AND FOOD TRUCKS

Sunday 9 am – 4 pm, City Hall, 511 Royal Ave, New Westminster

Looking to deal with your Christmas tree? The New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society will be chipping up trees by donation. There will also be three delicious food trucks on site, so make it an event!

HIT UP A LOCAL SLEDDING HILL

We got our white christmas and now the snow is sticking around a bit, at least for one more weekend! So, why not make the most of it? Grab a sled and hit one of the local hills for a fun time with the kids. If you are looking for different hill ideas then click the link in the heading, I recently did a blog post with some good spots.
